How it works

How Rooted Reality works — on your devices, not ours

Rooted Reality is a local-first desktop app for households with kids and teens. It turns the everyday activity it sees on your own devices into posture signals you can read at a glance, then hands you calm context and conversation prompts to act on. The loop is short and it stays on your machine: activity in, signals and guidance out, nothing uploaded.

The loop, end to end

  1. 01

    Activity, seen locally

The desktop app reads which apps and sites your kids actually use, on your household's own devices. That activity is the raw input — and it stays on the machine it was seen on.

  2. 02

    Posture signals, three lenses

Activity becomes posture signals you can read at a glance across three lenses — attention, trust, and readiness — each with its own confidence, never a single number to chase.

  3. 03

    Guardian context + readiness practice

Signals surface as calm context for you and as age-tuned conversation prompts your family can practice with. The app helps you start the conversation; it does not hand down a score.

  4. 04

    Nothing leaves the device

Household activity, readiness data, and signals are never uploaded to Rooted Reality. The whole loop runs on your devices — by design, not by policy.

Three lenses on the same activity

The same on-device activity is read three ways. Each lens answers a different household question, and each carries its own confidence so you can see both the signal and its limits.

Attention

Where time and focus go across the day, and which surfaces pull the most of it. Built to show patterns a household can talk about — not to police minutes.

Trust

The posture of the apps and surfaces themselves — how they handle moderation, privacy, security, and youth protection. This lens is fed by our public reference-library reviews.

Readiness

Patterns that show where a child is building digital judgment, and where an open-ended conversation would help. Every prompt the app can show is published, verbatim.

From signal to conversation

Signals are only useful if they help a household act. Rooted Reality gives the guardian — you — calm context on what changed, then offers age-tuned conversation starters drawn from a published catalog. It is readiness practice, not an alert feed: open-ended prompts you can choose to use, tuned to your child's age, with every prompt listed in the open so nothing is hidden.

It runs on your devices

The scoring runs on the desktop app. The signals stay on the desktop app. The reports stay on the desktop app. There is no wire from your home to us for household data — only a short, published list of control-plane calls (license and subscription checks, device registration, signed updates, the block-list and app-ratings refresh, and a reachability ping for optional on-device AI). What does and does not leave your home is written down to the line of code that makes each call.
