Why this status

New York's General Business Law Article 47 — the AI Companion Models law — has been in effect since November 5, 2025, requiring AI companion operators to disclose they are not human and to refer users showing signs of self-harm to crisis resources.

What this means

  • If your family uses an AI companion app — one designed to act as a friend, confidant, or relationship partner — any operator serving New York users is required by law to interrupt the session and remind the user they are talking to a computer program, starting at session launch and again every three hours of continued use. The law also requires these apps to detect signs of suicidal ideation or self-harm and route users to crisis services. Fines collected for non-compliance go toward funding suicide prevention programs in New York. The rule covers 'AI companion' products specifically — apps designed to simulate human relationships. It is not a general AI-disclosure rule for every chatbot or search tool.

What to verify next

  • You can read the full statute text at the New York Senate's legislation site by searching General Business Law Article 47 (§§ 1700-1704). If you want to see what the Governor's office communicated directly to companies about their obligations, the open letter referenced in the November 10, 2025 press release is linked from the Governor's site and describes the requirements in plain terms.
