Why this status

Connecticut enacted Public Act 26-15 (Substitute Senate Bill 5, 'An Act Concerning Online Safety'), signed by Governor Lamont on May 27, 2026. Its AI companion provisions require operators of AI systems that simulate human conversation to make reasonable efforts to detect user expressions of suicidal ideation or self-harm and to follow a protocol that refers users to crisis resources, alongside disclosure that a user is interacting with AI and added safeguards for minors. Customer-service chatbots and non-anthropomorphic healthcare support tools are carved out. The AI companion requirements take effect January 1, 2027; other parts of the act phase in between October 2026 and January 2028.
